ABSTRACT
Sahin K, Sahin N, Sari M., Digestibility, growth, serum and tissue selenium in
lambs ingesting Astragalus spp,
Onl J Vet Res., 29 (10): 627-638, 2025. We describe digestibility, growth, serum and tissue selenium in three
groups of 6 month lambs each gavaged 0.2, 50, and 52
ppm selenium with Astragalus gummifer or A kurdicus of 70% forage and 30% concentrate daily for 90
days. Five controls were fed hay. In those fed
we observed ataxia, paralysis, hair loss, lacrimation, and cracked hoof
walls by 30 days and by 90 days, serum and tissue selenium increased 37 to 90
and 20 to 48 times above controls (P < 0.05)
whereas feed intake and weight gain had declined (P < 0.05) 27 to 29%
. The findings suggest Astralagus spp is toxic
fed to young lambs.
