Minimally invasive fluoroscopic guided extirpation of isolated shadows within interphalangeal joints in horses.

ABSTRACT

 

Marzok MA, Höppner S, Hertsch W, Minimally invasive fluoroscopic guided extirpation of isolated shadows within interphalangeal joints in the horse. Onl J Vet Res, 14 (1):18-27, 2010.  C-arm fluoroscopy for operating interphalangeal joints as a minimal invasive technique in equine is described. A total of 128 interphalangeal joints underwent succesfull intervention. The indications in all horses were Surgical removal of isolated shadows (radiopaque bodies) from the region of the extensor process of the pedal bone (36 horses), the dorsal aspect of the pastern (4 horses) and the dorsal or the palmar/plantar aspect of the fetlock joint (80 horses). From the technical point of view all the operations were easily performed and no intraoperative complications were encountered. All horses have clean and dried incision line at the initial bandage change and at all bandage changes. Postoperative radiographs did not reveal any productive bone changes (periosteal reactions) resulting from surgery. In conclusion, the C-arm fluoroscopy technology proved to be an effective and safe procedure for minimally invasive operating the Interphalangeal joints.
