ABSTRACT

Sajedianfard J, Nazifi S, Shamsaei H., Effect of oral silymarin on body weight, blood glucose and vitamin A, C and E levels in diabetic male Sprague Dawley rats. Onl J Vet Res., 18(9): 727-734  2014. Groups of 10 male diabetic rats each were gavaged 100, 175 or 250 mg/kg sylimarin for 14 days. Controls were normal or diabetic rats gavaged with saline for the same period. Diabetes was induced by IP injection of 50mg/kg streptozotocin.  Weight and blood glucose were measured before and 3, 7 and 14 days after treatments. Blood samples were collected by heart puncture. Average weight increased and blood glucose decreased in treated rats. Vitamin A and C increased whereas vitamin E decreased in a dose-dependent manner in treated rats. Results suggest that high therapeutic doses of silymarin may alter body weight, glucose and serum antioxidants in diabetic rats.
