Hind limb temperature of horses after cross country racing during a 3-day-event.

Early response to specific exercise modes such as cross-country race in a 3-day-event remains poorly investigated. The time required for surface temperature of hind limbs of 11 normal horses to return to baseline after a cross-country race during a 3-day-event is described. Thermograms of upper hind limb gluteus, biceps, quadriceps, semitendinosus and semi-membranosus muscles before and immediately after cross-country racing were done with an infrared FLIR thermovision cameraTM  repeated at 30min and 2, 6, 12 and 24h after racing. The gluteal muscles exhibited highest post-race surface temperature of 41.20 ± 2.54°C. Baseline temperatures returned by 2h in all muscles except in gluteal muscle which delayed to 12h.
