Molecular surveillance by PCR 16S and 18S rRNA genes for bovine tick-borne diseases

ABSTRACT

 

Naghshgar N, Namavari M., Molecular surveillance by PCR 16S and 18S rRNA genes for bovine tick-borne diseases, Online J Vet Res., 16 (3):117-122, 2012.  Tick-borne diseases in cattle are common in temperate, subtropical and tropical countries and lead to meat and milk production losses with some diseases being zoonozes. However, little is known about the pathogens and no molecular method allows an integrated detection of tick-borne pathogens in cattle in Iran. In this study we monitored 100 cattle from different regions of Fars province Iran. The molecular surveillance of tick-borne diseases was based on PCR amplification of the 16S and 18S rRNA genes. For rickettsia, PCR was positive for 2% of blood samples, whereas for protozoa, PCR was positive for 19% of blood samples. Two of the bacteria-positive blood samples were also positive for protozoa. Sequencing results showed that cattle were infected with Anaplasma marginale and Theileria annulata .
