A serological, molecular and histopathological survey of Toxoplasma gondii infection in free ranging chickens

Prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in free-ranging chickens (Gallus domesticus) is related to environmental contamination by T. gondii oocysts. Blood, brain tissue and sera were taken from 150 birds to determine the prevalence of T. gondii infection. Sera was tested by a modified agglutination test (MAT). Brain samples of seropositive cases were further analyzed by molecular and immunohistochemistry (IHC) tests.  Antibodies to T. gondii were found in 6% of the serum samples and 3% brain by PCR and IHC tests. Results suggest widespread exposure of free range chickens to T. gondii in Southern Iran.
