Effect of Chloramine –T on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) treatments on stored flesh microbe counts

Sattari A, Sami M, Soltani S, Sharifi H., Effect of Chloramine –T on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)  treatments on stored flesh microbe counts, Onl J Vet Res., 18(6): 516-520, 2014.  Chloramine –T (CL-T) is used to disinfect fin and gill rot and surface injuries on fish. The effect of CL-T treatment on living trout on microbes of stored trout flesh, however, has not been reported. Twelve rainbow trout weighing 70 ± 13gr were treated 20mg/ l of CL-T (Halamid®) once daily for 60min for 3 consecutive days. Twelve controls were not treated. At the 4th day, trout were caught and total (TB), lactic acid (LAB) and coliform bacterial counts (CB) were determined from flesh stored at 4C for 5 days. Results suggested that CL-T treatments had no significant effect on total bacterial count but may have increased TB and CB counts. The finding suggest that Chloramine –T (CL-T at 20mg/l )be not used at least 3 days prior to catch and storage.
