ABSTRACT

Erjaeea H, Sadeghi Sarvestanic MV, Honarmand M, Nazifi S., Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3,  calcium, phosphorus and parathyroid hormone levels in normal female and male horses, Onl J Vet Res., 19(8): 572-577, 2015. We report serum calcium (Ca+), phosphorous(P), PTH and 25(OH)D3 concentrations in 15 male and 45 normal female horses. The horses were separated into groups with <20,  20-40 and >40 ng/L 25(OH)D3 levels. There was no significant difference in 25(OH)D3 levels based on gender, or P and PTH values between groups. However, serum Ca+ levels were different in all groups and inversely correlated to serum 25(OH)D3. Results suggest a relationship between serum calcium and 25(OH)D3 concentrations in healthy horses. 25(OH)D3 values were lower in horses compared with other species.

Key Words: Parathyroid hormone, Calcium, Phosphorous, 25-hydroxyvitamin D3
