Effect of human platelet rich plasma on bone healing in rabbits

ABSTRACT

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is used to stimulate bone formation in vivo. The effect of human PRP (xenogenic PRP) on new bone formation in diaphyseal long bone defects in rabbits is described. A critical size defect (10 mm) in the radial diaphysis was created in fully anaesthetized rabbits given human PRP (treated = 6) or not (controls = 6). Radiographs of forelimbs were taken on  the 1st day and 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th weeks post surgery to evaluate bone formation, union and remodeling. Operated radiuses were removed 56th post-surgery day and evaluated for healing and biomechanical tests were conducted on the forearm. Radiographic evidence and statistical tests suggested that human PRP (hPRP) promoted bone regeneration in the rabbit.
